Coach's Corner

*SWINE FLU ALERT*

With predictions of swine flu outbreaks in the coming weeks and our kids being in a high-risk age group, the league is suggesting some policies intended to keep the children and their families healthy. We encourage you to promote similar measures.  Nobody knows how bad swine flu will get, but it’s not hard to imagine that it could affect enough of our players that we’d have to cancel some games.  (Our Spring season ended last year with one of our players in the hospital with swine flu and his mother was also seriously ill.)  In the interest of health and baseball, I think we should be proactive and do our part to prevent the spread of swine flu and other infectious diseases.

Some suggestions:
1) Have a large container of hand sanitizer at every practice and game.  As each player and coach arrives at practice, the first thing they must do is use the hand sanitizer.  It would be a good thing to end practice with the same routine.

2) Encourage players to use batting gloves.  Those who don’t use batting gloves and share bats should use hand sanitizer before picking up the bat to hit.

3) Coaches -- strongly discourage spitting.

4) At the end of games do fist bumps with opposing teams rather than hand shakes.

5) Encourage parents to emphasize good hand-washing practices at home for their kids, pay attention to recommendations by public health officials regarding vaccinations for H1N1 and seasonal flu, and to keep your
sons at home if they are sick with flu-like symptoms.

Remember These 8 Things

Remove all trash from the field, benches, etc.

The coach of the home team should arrive early to the game to prepare the field i.e. raking, putting down bases, taking care of wet spots, etc

Arrive at the field before game time. Be organized! Have the line-up prepared, field set, and players ready by game time. Be quick between innings! It’s inconsiderate for one team to arrive late, be unprepared and take too long between innings. Often the result is that the game cannot get in all the innings since there is a time limit.

Winning teams in the kid-pitch leagues should call or e-mail the scores to the Commissioners.

If a kid-pitch Sunday game has to be cancelled the league must be notified by 2:30 on the Friday before the game. To cancel a Friday or Saturday game the league must have at least 48-hour notice.

The rainout line is 301-229-2724, press 1. The rainout line is only for games not practices.

Do not get into confrontations with umpires. If you wish to file a complaint about an umpire contact the league office.

Inform the league office as soon as possible about umpire no-shows or if the field was not lined.
